Are You Neurodiverse? Maybe You Should Try This Dating App
Mattr is poised to help neurodivergent singles find their perfect match
The dating scene just welcomed a new app with the launch of Mattr, the groundbreaking dating platform designed specifically for people with autism, ADHD and other neurodivergencies.
Founded by Jamie Johnston, 34, after his own ADHD diagnosis in early 2021, Mattr aims to create a unique, inclusive space for neurodivergent individuals to connect without the typical pressures and pitfalls of traditional dating apps.
“The app offers a variety of features specifically designed with neurodiversity in mind”
Jamie, who felt addicted to the "stimuli and dopamine" from conventional dating platforms, saw the need for a change. "I was addicted to the dopamine of it rather than actually trying to find a partner," Jamie told the BBC. "It was exhausting, and I knew something had to change. I wanted to create a space where everyone feels comfortable being themselves, without fear of judgment from others or the app itself."
Mattr is currently catering to Londoners with a significant user base in East London, has already attracted 1,200 active users in its first year. The app offers a variety of features specifically designed with neurodiversity in mind, including the option to share neurodiversity details, daily mental health check-ins, the ability to take a break and notify matches, a limit of up to four matches per day, a personality algorithm based on interests, conversation prompts, video reply options, and verified profiles.
“94% of neurodivergent respondents felt misunderstood by digital matchmaking services.”
Jamie emphasized that these features aim to address the common challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals on traditional dating apps, such as feeling overwhelmed and misunderstood.
In a survey conducted among autistic app users, four out of five reported that other dating apps did not represent them, and a staggering 94% of neurodivergent respondents felt misunderstood by digital matchmaking services.
Mattr's unique approach, including the "You'll need to know" section where users can share personal details about their neurodiversity, helps create an environment where people feel free and open to express themselves.
The benefits of Mattr are clear. By offering a neurodivergent-friendly platform, Mattr helps reduce the stress and anxiety often associated with online dating. It fosters a community of acceptance and understanding, making dating a more positive and fulfilling experience.
For those who have felt sidelined by traditional dating apps, Mattr offers a refreshing alternative, allowing users to be seen for who they truly are and to find meaningful connections in a supportive environment.
