Elon Musk's Neuralink Experiments Lead to Over 1,500 Animal Deaths

Recently revealed documents have shed light on the unsettling practices used in Elon Musk's Neuralink project.

These practices include invasive procedures on monkeys, such as drilling into their skulls and using a substance called 'Bioglue' to seal the incisions. This information comes to light as Musk, known for his leadership of Tesla and SpaceX, announced the first human recipient of a Neuralink implant.

The documents, released by the University of California, Davis, detail the extent of the experiments carried out between 2017 and 2020. They reveal that some monkeys underwent multiple surgeries, with implants not fitting correctly and protruding from their skulls. Additionally, the records show instances of monkeys suffering severe health issues, leading to limb amputations and eventual euthanasia.

It's now reported that Neuralink's research has resulted in the death of at least 1,500 animals, including sheep and pigs, in its pursuit of developing a chip that could enable humans to control electronic devices with their minds.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which obtained these documents, criticised the project for causing 'extreme suffering' to the animals and showing a blatant disregard for their well-being. They urge the public to question Musk's optimistic projections about the technology.

Elon has said that the advantages (for humans obviously), will be more than worthwhile. He wrote on Twitter/X: “Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs. Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal."

Musk previously mentioned plans to initiate human trials, particularly targeting quadriplegics under 40, involving the removal of a part of their skull and the implantation of electrode-lined threads by a robot.

The revelations, particularly the detailed accounts of the procedures and their impact on the animals, have sparked a wave of concern and controversy surrounding the ethical implications of such experimental practices.

These reports reveal the very dark side of innovation: extreme animal suffering. And it’s challenging us to rethink the cost of progress.
