Facebook is having an identity crisis
Facebook wants to change it’s name to ‘Meta’.
Meta has the aim of becoming more of a ‘meta verse company’, not purely a social media platform. The Facebook app will likely exist under the new name, ‘Meta’.
Twitter users have been discussing the name change and making fun of the platform following recent the recent blackout.
Facebook is facing scrutiny from Wall Street journal reports on the leaked documents concerning the companies business practices and data privacy laws. The reports also look into the effects of Instagram on teenagers mental health and self confidence. The whistleblower behind the leaks testified in front of Congress, disclosing that Facebook puts profits over safety and action needed to be taken to stop this.
The idea behind the ‘meta-verse’ is a multipurpose digital space where users can interact using avatars (think the Matrix). Zuckerberg called it ‘an embodied internet’.
To work on the new meta-verse concept, Facebook has hired a further 100,000 people across Europe to make Meta come to life.
What do you think of the name change?
