What happened:

According to BBC News back on 19th of August, nude content would still be allowed on the site, but it will have to adhere to OnlyFans strict policies and guidelines.

The announcement was made after news outlets approached OnlyFans to comment on the leaked documents which shows concerns over accounts who post illegal content.

The change came about after OnlyFans received mounting pressure from its banking partners.

The site grew quickly during the pandemic, as many sex workers were not able to carry on their work in person, according to supporters of the platform OnlyFans was a platform that offered sanction and income to those in the adult entertainment industry.

The subscription site allows its users to create content involving nudity, and charge the subscribers a monthly fee for viewing. The creators can post anything they want, but the site grew quickly as a pornographc video outlet.

‘In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines’ OnlyFans said in a statement.

The change to the guidelines has been met with increasing scrutiny on social media, with backlash over the decision to push sex workers out of the previously inclusive community. Many fear it will push sex workers out of the safe community, and back on the streets exposing them to risk and violence.

What has changed:

In just a matter of days, the company pivoted on its decision, announcing in a tweet on Wednesday: “We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change.”

The reason for the reversal of the decision was due mainly to backlash from the platforms content creators, who were beginning to abandon the site after the initial announcement.

For OnlyFans, the decision seems to have been made to salvage the site from being ruined or left behind. After Tumblr banned pornography in 2018 the site quickly found itself with a much smaller user base.
