The Swedish music streaming app has partnered exclusively with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to create Archewell Audio. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have gone to great lengths to partner up with leading tech companies and expand their media footprint since leaving the royal family. This news comes hot on the heels of their partnerships with Disney+ and Netflix. Meghan previously narrating Disney documentary Elephants, while the couple’s deal with Netflix is rumoured to be worth around £100m.

This latest partnership cements Spotify’s position in the music industry as the premium destination for audio content. In June, Spotify signed an exclusive deal with Kim Kardashian, and former First Lady Michelle Obama debuted her own podcast on the platform in July. Earlier this year, The Joe Rogan Experience – now one of the most popular podcasts in the world – became exclusive to Spotify.

Archewell Audio is embarking on a multi-year partnership with Spotify, which will include a variety of programmes hosted by Harry and Meghan and also include shows produced by the couple. A holiday special set to be released later this month. A teaser shared on the service earlier today revealed that it will ‘uplift and entertain audiences around the world’ and feature ‘diverse perspectives and voices’.

‘What we love about podcasting is that it reminds all of us to take a moment and to really listen, to connect to one another without distraction,’ explained the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the teaser. ‘With the challenges of 2020, there has never been a more important time to do so, because when we hear each other, and hear each other’s stories, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are.’

Their first series will launch next year and all of their audio projects will be available exclusively on Spotify. ‘The power of their voices rests in their status as citizens of the world,’ said Dawn Ostroff, chief content and advertising business officer for Spotify, in a statement on Tuesday. ‘That they are embracing the extraordinary capacity of podcasts on Spotify while also seeking to elevate underrepresented voices is a testament to their appreciation for the potential of audio storytelling.’

It is unknown how much the couple made from their partnership with Spotify but the streaming service paid £75m ($100m) for their deal with Joe Rogan back in May.
