We tried one of London’s only $18,000 Somadome Meditation Pods

This well-being device is out of this world

If it looks like a personal space capsule it’s because that's essentially what it is: a private escape pod that lets you drift away using a combination of colour therapy and “binaural beat meditation.”

Sparked by a dream in 1996, the Somadome was born out of a genuine desire to provide a safe space to go within and access a world of tranquility. The Somadome is the world’s first meditation dome founded by Sara Attia. She says, “Connecting with self allows us to tap into our inner Source, where we are limitless.” So with that… we gave it a try.

The Somadome retails for $ 14,500, but you can book a session at Re Place in Notting Hill, London. It provides a sacred space to experience the scientifically proven benefits of meditation. The Somadome combines ancient healing practices with modern technology, including the healing properties of LED color and light therapy, Binaural Beats, and Microcrystalline Tiles that create an environment for profound mental, spiritual, and physical benefits.

A session lasts for 20 min, and the experience can be guided or unguided. With a clear intention, Somadome users can experience everything from enhanced creativity, greater focus, getting in the zone athletically, reduced anxiety and depression, less reactivity, improved performance at work, better sleep patterns, and a sense of connectedness and alignment with inner knowing and more.

We can see the value, once inside in minutes we were cocooned in a soft glow of light… Making it much easier to relax. Westbourne Grove, where we found the dome is relatively tranquil compared to the rest of London, but still it’s easy to see why these are particularly effective for city dwellers.

Somadome offers different meditation tracks each targeting a specific goal, such as healing, physical performance, focus, love or overcoming various obstacles. If you are new to meditation you may prefer a track that includes verbal guidance, while others may like an unguided track with just ambient music. All tracks include binaural beats. The pod works with its own programme of guided meditations - but it would be nice to see other wellness gurus work with the company. (Headspace we’re looking at you.)

What are Binaural beats?

Binaural beats are audible sounds that are perceived by your brain, in the setting of listening to stereo musical frequencies through a headset. In a sense, they are an acoustic illusion, or artifact, that is built from the particular interaction of two different sounds. It’s believed that binaural beats assist in achieving a state where altering your mood is more likely, or that binaural beats may actually ‘entrain’ your brain towards the preferred state of mind you choose.
