5 things you need to know about the new Apple Air M2 Laptop

The new Macbook goes into a new Air-a

Here at The Modems there is nothing that we love more than a new tech release… especially when it hails from Cupertino (Apple’s headquarters.) Virtually every aspect of the new MacBook Air has been updated or changed — it’s the most significant update to the Air since it originally debuted nearly a decade and a half ago. Until we get our hands on the latest model here are 5 things you NEED to know about the Apple Air M2:

1 | Thinner, lighter design

It borrows a lot of its design from the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 that debuted late last year. It’s symmetrical and squared off, with a more brutalist presentation than prior MacBook Air models. Yet, it’s still remarkably thin - just a smidge over 11 millimetres.

It’s also slightly lighter, 0.1 pounds to be precise. That’s not a huge difference, and the Air is far from the most lightweight computer you can buy, but it does make it highly portable and easy to tote around whenever you need it.

MacBook Air comes in four gorgeous finishes; Space Grey, Silver, Midnight and Starlight.

2 | Better performance with the new M2 chip

This new Air has Apple’s latest in-house processor, the M2. The M2 chip starts the next generation of Apple silicon, with even more of the speed and power efficiency of M1. So you can get more done faster with a more powerful 8-core CPU (Central Processing Unit). You can now keep working — or playing — all day and into the night with up to 18 hours of battery life.

3 | Wireless charging with MagSafe

The quick-release MagSafe power connector easily attaches — and detaches — with magnets, preventing unintended flights. Two Thunderbolt ports let you connect and power high-speed accessories.

4 | Display, Webcam, and Audio: All Better

The breathtaking 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display is the biggest — and brightest — ever on MacBook Air, with support for 1 billion colours. Text is super-crisp, and photos and movies are more brilliant and vivid, with rich contrast and sharp detail.

As for camera quality, it's a significant upgrade from the 720p cameras used just a couple of years ago. You’ll look even better in Zoom meetings now.

The Air has gotten upgrades for the ears and the eyes, with a new four-speaker setup that supports Spatial Audio, even without headphones.

5 | You need to pay for the upgrade

The M2 MacBook Air was released in the UK on the 15th of July. The M2 Air starts at £1,249 (256GB) and goes up to £1,549 for the version with more storage (512GB) and two additional GPU cores. For comparison, the 2020 MacBook Air is currently priced at £999.
